Jharkhand’s rich tradition of tribal weaving and handicrafts has found global recognition through the efforts of Ashish Satyavrat Sahu, founder of the Johargram brand. By bringing indigenous garments and textiles to international platforms, Sahu has not only showcased the state’s cultural heritage but also positioned Jharkhand as a hub of creativity and innovation.
In the 126th episode of the radio programme Mann Ki Baat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded Sahu’s contribution, highlighting how local talent and tradition, when combined with innovation, can achieve extraordinary results. Babulal Marandi, BJP state president and Leader of Opposition in Jharkhand, expressed gratitude to PM Modi for recognizing Sahu’s work. “Jharkhand’s people, arts, and culture hold a special place in the heart of the Prime Minister. Through his acknowledgment, the world becomes aware of our state’s unique talent and traditions,” Marandi said, adding that Jharkhand is not only progressing through its mineral resources but also by promoting arts, customs, and culture, thereby contributing to the vision of a self-reliant and developed India.
Sanjay Seth, Union Minister of State for Defence, who has observed Sahu’s dedication during his tenure as chairman of the Khadi and Village Industries Board, said, “Ashish Satyavrat Sahu is a brand in himself. His commitment to khadi, Jharkhand, and tribal culture is exemplary. He has become an inspiration for countless young entrepreneurs committed to #VocalForLocal.” Sahu was recently felicitated at the Minister’s residence in recognition of his achievements.
Political leaders have also emphasized integrating local culture with national initiatives. Marandi urged the people of Jharkhand to connect festivals and celebrations with the self-reliant India campaign, promoting local products and strengthening cultural identity. He particularly called for the inclusion of khadi garments during the Gandhi and Shastri Jayanti celebrations and the upcoming Vijayadashami festival.
Ashish Satyavrat Sahu’s journey exemplifies how entrepreneurship can preserve cultural heritage while creating global impact. Through Johargram, Jharkhand’s tribal weaving is not only entering international markets but also inspiring a new generation of youth to take pride in their traditions while pursuing innovation.
The recognition from the Prime Minister, along with political and social support, reinforces the state’s position as a center for culture-driven entrepreneurship and showcases the power of blending tradition with modern enterprise.
